D. Viel made this drawing, “Woman in a doorway looking after two children,” sometime in the past, using ink to bring the scene to life. I'm struck by the woman standing in the doorway; she's watching children leave, but her expression is unreadable. What is she feeling? Is she a mother, a sister, a caretaker? I wonder what thoughts might be swirling in her head as she watches the children move away from her, perhaps to school. The drawing is so carefully composed, the artist has included a street lamp, a window reflecting other children, and even a bucket in the street. I imagine Viel, pen in hand, carefully building the scene, line by line, as he decides what details to include. I feel the emotional weight, the silent narrative of daily life. It reminds me that art is a conversation, an exchange of ideas across time, inspiring our own creativity.
