Gunther Forg made Heliogravuren zu den Documenta Bildern using, well, helio-gravure, a printmaking process involving light and acid. It’s all about process, right? Looking closely, the surface has a subtle, velvety texture, and the color feels both warm and industrial – that orangey-red against the pale yellow is so hot. You can almost feel the heat radiating off this piece. It’s not just a representation of a brick wall; it embodies the feel of it, the very materiality of buildings and cities. That one brick near the bottom left, with those little blotches, almost looks like a face staring back at you. It reminds me of a Cy Twombly, who was also interested in surfaces and mark-making. Ultimately, this print celebrates the simple beauty of the built environment.
