Jacob Binck created this engraving of the Enthroned Virgin and Child with Apple in a halo of rays sometime in the early to mid-16th century. Binck worked during the Reformation, a period of seismic upheaval in the Christian world, so representations of the Virgin Mary and the infant Christ were politically charged. Here, Mary’s serene gaze suggests a powerful yet tender figure. The apple in Christ’s hand symbolizes salvation and alludes to original sin, which is traditionally connected to Eve’s actions, yet the artwork challenges this historical narrative by positioning Mary as the central figure of redemption. This engraving, small in scale, invited intimate contemplation. Consider the emotional and personal dimensions of faith in a rapidly changing world. How might such an image offer solace or strength during times of religious and social transformation?
