Johann Christian Ernst Müller created this portrait of Frederik Willem III, King of Prussia. Consider the weight of monarchy in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Müller, as the artist, stood in a complex relationship to power; commissioned to portray the King, he was simultaneously beholden to and reflective of the monarchy's influence. Müller’s portrait captures the King in a conventional profile, but it also hints at the narratives of leadership, duty, and perhaps even the personal struggles experienced by those in positions of power. The King looks off to the side, perhaps a comment on the burdens of leadership and the weight of expectation. What does it mean to carry the weight of a nation's expectations on your shoulders? This portrait invites us to reflect on the individuals behind the crowns.
