Kazimir Malevich created "Sisters," an oil on canvas, currently displayed in the Tretyakov Gallery. The artwork is a symphony of form and texture. The composition is dominated by the figures of two women, rendered with broad strokes of white, which gives them an almost ghostly presence against a backdrop of vibrant greens and blues. The shapes are simplified, moving away from naturalistic representation towards a focus on essential forms. Malevich employs a limited palette, yet achieves a remarkable range of tones through layering and juxtaposition. The brushstrokes are visible, adding a tactile quality to the surface. This approach reflects the early stirrings of abstraction in Malevich's work, a move away from depicting the world as it appears, and towards a deeper exploration of pure artistic form. It destabilizes traditional expectations of portraiture, prompting a re-evaluation of what constitutes likeness and representation. Note how the geometric qualities of the painting challenge fixed meanings by reducing the figures to their structural essence. In doing so, Malevich invites us to reconsider the boundaries between the subject and the medium.
