Curatorial notes

Lee Bontecou made this untitled drawing with charcoal in 1964, and it’s a real testament to the power of process. There’s a layering, a building up of tones, that feels almost sculptural. Looking closely, you can see how she coaxes depth out of a monochrome palette. The charcoal isn’t just applied, it’s rubbed, smudged, and blended, creating a hazy atmosphere. This creates a sense of movement, like forms emerging from a fog. The sweeping curves in the top left, contrast the linear shapes at the bottom and this tension, this play of opposites, gives the piece its energy. You know, it reminds me a bit of Piranesi’s architectural fantasies, that same sense of infinite space. But where Piranesi is precise, Bontecou is more suggestive, more open to interpretation. And that's what I love about art, it’s an invitation, not a declaration.
