Curatorial notes

Gerard Valck created this print, *Zich vlooiende vrouw*, or *Woman Catching Fleas*, using the mezzotint technique. The image presents a scene of intimate domesticity, yet it is loaded with cultural meaning. Made in the Netherlands, at a time when the Dutch Republic was a major center of trade and commerce, this image may seem like a simple genre scene. But consider the economic factors that underpinned everyday life. A woman hunts for fleas in her clothing, by candlelight, in a modest interior. What does it say about the social structures of its time? Is it intended to elicit sympathy for the less fortunate? Is it an allegory, or a moralizing tale? Further research into Dutch social history and popular iconography, including pamphlets, poems, and popular songs, might shed light on the subject. It can help us understand the social context in which it was made, and the meanings that it might have held for its original audience.
