Isaac Israels made this drawing, Figures on the Beach, at an unknown date with a graphite pencil. I love how Israels uses these bold, scribbled lines to create this scene. It's like he's trying to capture the essence of a beach day. You can almost feel the wind and the energy of the people enjoying themselves. Look at that sky, those horizontal lines stacked on top of one another are so evocative of the weather. The marks are so raw and immediate, it feels like he’s trying to show us a feeling more than an exact picture. Each stroke is a little burst of energy. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t always have to be about perfection. Sometimes, it’s about capturing a moment and letting the energy flow. Think about other artists like Daumier, who also used drawing to make sense of the world.
