Curatorial notes

This title page for "Handelsmagazin for Island," was created in 1788 in Copenhagen by Frederik Ludvig Bradt, using engraving. The printmaking process allows for the intricate detail we see here. By cutting lines into a metal plate, inking the surface, and then pressing paper against it, Bradt was able to create multiple identical impressions. This was crucial for disseminating information in an era before photography. The magazine’s title is framed by imagery that speaks to Iceland's natural resources – livestock, fishing, and the dramatic volcanic landscape, signalling its economic potential. These would have been vital commodities, essential to the circuits of trade and consumption that defined the period. The detailed rendering emphasizes the labor and skill involved in producing and trading them. This title page, then, isn't just a decorative element, but a carefully constructed piece of visual rhetoric, intertwining Iceland's identity with the burgeoning forces of commerce.
