Curatorial notes
This photograph, "Huis met oprijlaan," from an anonymous maker, is a study in grayscale where the tones create a gentle image. The image documents a house and driveway. When I look at this work, I start thinking about the possibilities afforded by the different shades of gray. It is a world of tonal variation, it has a very particular materiality. Consider the contrast between the darks in the tree on the left, and the light roof of the house. The tonal contrasts shape our emotional experience of the artwork and contribute to its conceptual resonances. Think of Eva Hesse, her use of industrial materials and focus on process, shares a similar sensibility. Ultimately, the photograph embraces ambiguity and multiple interpretations over fixed meanings.
