G. Hidderley made this photo of a woman knitting in traditional dress at an unknown date. She stands on the grass in what looks like a barren orchard. I can see the sepia tones that create a dreamy and perhaps old-fashioned scene. It reminds me of a fairytale. A woman lost in the woods, but instead of being scared, she’s knitting, she’s taking care of herself. I wonder what Hidderley was thinking. Why they chose this woman, this place. Maybe the trees are not barren but resting, holding the promise of spring. Maybe Hidderley saw that promise, saw the connection between the woman’s steady hands and the land’s quiet strength. Hidderley, like the woman in the picture, made something, drawing on the landscape, and knitting it into something new. We make and remake the world, don’t we?
