Philips Galle created this engraving, *Adoration of the Shepherds*, sometime before 1612. The composition is arranged around a central, illuminated manger, drawing our eye immediately to the infant Christ. Around this, a semicircle of figures creates a sense of enclosure and reverence. The architecture provides a stark backdrop. The rough stone and repetitive arches offer a structural framework that contrasts with the soft, organic forms of the figures. The light, streaming from above, intersects with the shadows, enhancing the dramatic tension. Galle employs a sophisticated use of line. The fine, dense hatching creates depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the garments and the rough stonework. This dense application of line serves not only to describe form but also to evoke a mood of solemnity and awe, appropriate to the religious subject matter. Note how the formal elements—the light, the line, the composition—work together to construct meaning, inviting the viewer into a space of contemplation and devotion.
