Childe Hassam made this drawing of a fisherman on the Isle of Shoals with crayon, or maybe pastel, back in 1903. Look at how Hassam creates the waves with these horizontal strokes, like the ocean is a series of thoughts. The thing I love most about this drawing is the way he uses color to build form. See how the fisherman’s overalls aren’t just blue, but have hints of red and brown that suggest light and shadow? It reminds me of Cezanne, who also built up forms with color, and it makes me think about how process is a form of thinking. I mean, the fisherman himself is composed of hatched lines, each one building up to make the whole. It's like Hassam is saying something about how we’re all just a collection of moments, gestures, and colors. So, I'd say it embodies how art is just a conversation.
