This photograph shows a view of IJsselstein Castle, and was made by an anonymous photographer working for the Dutch Office for Monuments. IJsselstein Castle's story is intertwined with that of its inhabitants, particularly women who wielded significant influence. One such figure was Maria van Lalaing, who inherited the County of IJsselstein in the 16th century. Her marriage to Philip of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein was controversial. Maria was a Catholic noblewoman and Phillip a military commander of William of Orange. Despite the disapproval of the Spanish King, who seized her lands, Maria remained a staunch supporter of the Dutch Revolt. This image serves as a reminder of the power structures embedded in landscapes and architecture. The castle embodies a rich tapestry of social, political, and personal narratives. What stories do you imagine unfolded within these walls?
