This picture of the old hunting lodge in Poeldijk, or Torenzicht, as it was also known, was made by an anonymous photographer from Monumentenzorg. I'm trying to imagine the photographer setting up their camera, framing the old building just so. There's something about the muted tones, the way the light catches the brick, that makes me think of early photography, of capturing a moment in time that's already fading into the past. I wonder what they were thinking as they composed the shot? Were they drawn to the building's history, its connection to Oldenbarnevelt? Or were they simply captivated by its architecture, the way the tower rises above the surrounding landscape? It makes you realize how artists are always in dialogue with one another, building upon the ideas and techniques of those who came before. And how, even in a seemingly straightforward image like this, there's room for ambiguity, for multiple interpretations and meanings to emerge over time.
