This sheet of studies of figures and architectural details was sketched by Niels Larsen Stevns, we don't know when, with graphite on paper. Looking at this little page I can imagine the artist's hand moving across the surface, testing out shapes. The page feels like a notebook where the artist is freely doodling. There's an archway with curly flourishes, figures that could be dancers, and then a figure leaning over a table. What's fascinating is how lightly everything is rendered; these sketches barely touch the page. The figures are reduced to their barest essence, capturing their form. It makes me wonder what he was thinking about as he drew. Was he working something out? Did he later develop the archway and dancers in other works? These sketches are like seeing the artist thinking on paper, and it reminds us that art is as much about the process as the final product. We’re all just in this big conversation, responding to what others have done and dreaming up our own visions, one sketch at a time.
