Curatorial notes

This is a photograph of a man and woman with a baby made by G. Lekegian & Co. The sepia tones lend an antique feel, like a memory fading at the edges. What I find fascinating is how the family is arranged, almost like a still life, with the baby perched precariously on a small table. The texture of the print is smooth, but you can almost feel the stiff fabric of their clothes. Look at the way the light catches the mother's dress, creating subtle patterns of shadow and shine. It’s as if the photographer is trying to capture not just their image, but also their essence. There's something about the formality of the pose that reminds me of early portrait photography, like the work of Nadar. Art is an ongoing conversation across time. There’s no right or wrong way to see it. It’s all about embracing ambiguity and letting your imagination wander.
