This is Reticulárea, a walk-in sculpture made with metal and wire by Gego. The web, the net, the grid: forms of capturing, defining, controlling. But here, the rigid geometry loosens, floats. These structures harken back to the Renaissance and the obsession with perspective. Artists attempted to capture three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface by employing grid-like structures to create an illusion of depth. However, Gego’s work departs from the Renaissance search for order. Instead, the grid becomes a porous membrane, a non-hierarchical structure where every point is as important as the next. It evokes a sense of infinite space, recalling the ancient symbol of the cosmos as a web of interconnected points. This cosmic vision invites us to ponder our place within an ever-expanding universe, sparking the collective memory of the interconnectedness of all things. This is not a static, fixed representation but a dynamic, ever-changing structure, reminding us that our understanding of the world is always in flux, woven into the very fabric of our existence.
