Curatorial notes

Bahia Shehab created this striking stencil, ‘Your Mind is a Vagina’, on a wall using red spray paint. The contrast of red against the weathered surface and the organic shadows combine to form an eye-catching effect. The work combines a stenciled outline of a head in profile with a detailed brain inside it. To the left, a phrase in elegant Arabic script is written, which translates to the artwork's title. Shehab reclaims derogatory gendered insults to provoke discussion on social and political themes. The choice of red carries powerful connotations: it might represent blood, passion, or warning. The brain, which one might expect to be a symbol of rational thought, here unsettles the traditional gender roles. Shehab prompts us to reconsider the connections between intellect, identity, and societal expectations. The work functions as a form of visual activism, a semiotic intervention in public space. It destabilizes established categories, urging new interpretations and debates within its cultural context.
