This is an album page, titled Uitje (which means 'outing' in Dutch), and it's a collection of black and white photographs pasted onto brown paper. Looking at these images, I imagine someone carefully arranging them, thinking about how they relate, creating a narrative of a day or journey. It’s interesting how this anonymous artist made a painting out of photographs. Think about the choices that the artist must have made when constructing the page: What to include? How to arrange it? What to leave out? There's one of people on steps, another of figures amidst a green landscape. Each has its own little world contained within the frame. There's a certain quality of stillness and observation, like the artist wanted to capture a moment, not just as it was, but as it felt. The whole album page becomes a way of seeing, thinking, and experiencing life through these captured moments. Like all artists, they are in conversation with other artists, and here it's photography and collage. It all adds up to a unique expression.
