Editor: This photograph, "Vier portretten van kennissen van Herman Besselaar en Berti Hoppe," was taken around 1930 and features albumen prints within a photo album. It has an intimate feel because the different pictures create a dynamic range. How do you interpret this assemblage of images through a formalist lens? Curator: Looking at the visual components, I see a deliberate composition despite the apparent randomness of snapshots on a page. The layout creates a certain visual rhythm. Notice how the eye is drawn from one photograph to another. The contrast between the figures' positions – standing versus seated, indoors versus outdoors – establishes a dynamic interplay of form and space. How do these contrasts contribute to the overall visual experience? Editor: I see it; the way you look at these photographs shows their careful curation as individual elements contributing to a comprehensive work. Curator: Exactly. The varied framing and the tonal range, from light-filled exteriors to the interior scene, generate visual interest and maintain balance. Each print's edge and shape are also significant since they play into the aesthetic arrangement within the album’s framework. Even the album itself becomes part of the art object. Considering that, how does the materiality influence the perception of the images themselves? Editor: That is an excellent point. Recognizing the deliberate choice of using photography for artistic expression transforms my perspective on the album. It has made me notice previously overlooked compositional elements. Thank you. Curator: It’s a pleasure. Paying attention to details makes the experience even better.
