Wilhelm Marstrand sketched "Old Swedish Farmer Sitting on a Stone" using graphite on paper. Marstrand lived during a time of burgeoning nationalism and cultural identity formation in Denmark and Sweden. In this drawing we see a figure who seems to be a study of the nordic peasantry. While the figure could be seen as a celebration of rural life, it is important to consider how class distinctions play out within these representations. The farmer's weary posture and clasped hands might be seen as indicative of his labor. But it could also be said that such depictions run the risk of romanticizing the hardships faced by the working class. As we observe the farmer's contemplative stance, we might ponder the narratives which are constructed around national identity, and whose stories are centered or marginalized within them. The quiet dignity captured in the figure invites us to reflect on the complexities of history, representation, and lived experience.
