Percival Jenner made this drawing, Pattern, with what looks like graphite on paper. The precision of these lines hints at the satisfaction of craft, but the casualness of the drawing also shows the pleasure in getting things just right. There's a real beauty in the simplicity. Look at how the lines fade in and out, almost like a ghostly image, inviting you to step closer. The even tone of the graphite keeps everything on an even keel, and the ruled lines are so delicate. Notice the ruler Jenner used to make some of the lines, leaving traces of graphite on the paper's surface. It’s these little moments that give the drawing its charm. Jenner’s commitment to the unassuming resonates with the sensibilities of Agnes Martin, who used a similar process of making to create art that is more about contemplation than decoration. With both artists, there's a sense that what's left out is just as important as what's included.
