Adriaen van Ostade created this genre scene of leisure, Travellers at Rest, sometime in the 17th century. During this time, the Dutch Republic experienced economic prosperity, which trickled down through the classes and impacted society’s relationship to labor and leisure. In this painting we witness laborers in a moment of respite. A man reclines, embracing a large jug, while another smokes a pipe; their belongings scattered on the ground, and a third figure pours them more to drink. What's striking is the intimacy Van Ostade captures – a glimpse into the daily lives of working-class individuals. There is also the question of their identity. Who are these men, and what are their stories? While the painting appears to be an authentic slice of life, it’s important to remember that artists in this era were often commissioned to produce works that upheld the social order, so one must consider who is missing from the image. Ultimately, this image invites us to reflect on the narratives that art constructs and the societal values they reflect.

An elderly peasant and a somewhat younger man who has been hunting – his game bag and gun lie next to him – are seated with a tankard of beer or a pipe in the garden of an inn. After 1670 Adriaen van Ostade painted very few interiors; scenes set in the open air gained the upper hand. These tableaux contain little in the way of a moralizing message; instead, they extol unhurried, simple country life.
