Here are two vintage postcards from an album commemorating Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik's visit to Friesland. Imagine the person who carefully placed these images in this album. What were they thinking? Why this placement? The sepia tones lend an air of nostalgia, but these images aren't so much about the past as they are about the act of remembering and preserving. Perhaps they prompt a reflection on the ephemeral nature of moments and the human desire to make them more permanent. It’s interesting how photography and painting are also engaged in a shared conversation. Both are trying to capture a version of reality. Maybe the person who owned this album was thinking the same thing when they chose these postcards. The act of collecting and arranging is not unlike applying paint to a canvas—each decision contributes to a larger composition.
