These two postcards by Neurdein Frères capture a moment in time, like catching a butterfly with a net, the visit of Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik to Versailles. I imagine the photographers, like painters, carefully framing their shots, deciding what to include and exclude, with so many people milling about! Perhaps the light was tricky, casting shadows and obscuring details. The top image is interesting, capturing the Queen and Prince under an umbrella, almost hidden in plain sight. It makes you wonder what it was like to be there. What thoughts might have been going through the artists' minds as they composed each shot? The creation of these postcards is like a conversation, or an exchange of ideas across time, inspiring creativity and multiple interpretations. Each photograph offering its own unique perspective on that day.
