Anna Gaskell made this photograph of an outdoor scene, though the exact time is unknown. You get the sense that she played with the perspective, looking through one person's legs at another in the background. I can just imagine what she was thinking while she made this. I mean, who hasn't felt like they are on the outside looking in? Or maybe she was just goofing around. Maybe Gaskell wanted to play with our understanding of space by showing us several views at once. The texture is so smooth and cool, like the legs are made of porcelain! I am reminded of other photographers, like Laurie Simmons, who created surreal tableaux. Ultimately, Gaskell's photograph inspires this sense of wonder in me, reminding me that artists are constantly engaging with one another across generations and mediums. It is a constant exchange of ideas!
