This print, "Tandarts", was made anonymously, depicting a scene of dental surgery. Though undated, we can assume from the clothing and composition that it was likely made in the Netherlands, sometime in the 17th or 18th century. Depictions of medical procedures were common in this era, often playing on fears of quackery or criticizing new scientific innovation. Here, the dark setting and distressed expression of the patient contrasts with the relative comfort of the dentist and his assistants.
