This is a contact sheet by Robert Frank, made in Miami, Florida, probably in the 1950s. Look at those rows of tiny frames, each a little world, hinting at stories. I try to imagine Frank, a photographer in motion, his eye dancing between light and shadow. In those days you had to wait to see what you got, so he would have been seeing these for the first time like we do. The way he crops and frames, reminds me of how painters decide to isolate a certain detail, making a claim for the importance of what might otherwise be overlooked. What was he looking for? Was he trying to capture the essence of Miami? Frank reminds us that seeing is about framing, selecting, and ultimately interpreting the world around us. Like a painter, he coaxes meaning from chaos, inviting us to pause and reflect on the fleeting beauty of everyday life.
