Robert Frank made this artwork, Italy and Vienna--Early Europe 9, with photography. It makes me think about how the sequence of images mimics our ways of seeing and understanding the world: fragmented, iterative, and always in process. Each frame feels like a fleeting moment, an impression caught in time. I wonder if Frank felt like he was building up some kind of visual diary? I can imagine him walking around Italy and Vienna, just looking at everyday scenes. The darkroom effects—the graininess, the stark contrast—give everything a raw, immediate feeling. He must have wanted to strip away anything fussy. The '19' written over one strip feels casual, like a personal note, blurring the lines between the public and the private. It is a reminder that art-making is always a form of notation. Like a painter working in their studio, Frank is arranging and re-arranging his compositions through the lens, trying to find his way.
