William Unger made this print of a snow-covered landscape with birds. It is made with etching, a printmaking process that utilizes acid to create lines in a metal plate, which is then inked and pressed onto paper. What I find remarkable about etching is the combination of physical labor and chemical action required. The artist manipulates the metal surface directly, but must then surrender to the corrosive power of the acid. Unger clearly delighted in this subtle, yet powerful means of production. Look closely, and you will see how he has built up areas of tone, using finely worked lines to capture the dense texture of the bare trees and the soft blanket of snow. The dark, intricate web of branches against the pale sky creates a stark, wintry mood. Each mark bears witness to Unger's skill, and patience, in capturing the beauty of the natural world. Appreciating the artistry in this print reminds us that even seemingly simple images can carry deep cultural meaning through their material and making.
