This photograph of a landscape with a small stream was taken by Neville Keasberry at an unknown date. What really strikes me is the way he’s captured the light, it’s all about tonal variation in monochrome, the way the shadows play across the water, the dark mass of the trees, and the distant hills in the background. The textures here are so evocative; you can almost feel the dampness of the earth, the roughness of the foliage. There's a certain softness, an atmospheric quality that feels very real. It’s the kind of image you can almost step into. Look at the way the light catches the tops of the trees; it’s these little details that bring the scene to life. There's something of Carleton Watkins in the way Keasberry captures the grandeur of nature, but with a more intimate, personal touch. Like all good art, it leaves you with more questions than answers, a feeling of wonder and a desire to explore further.
