Giovanni Battista Piranesi etched this interior view of the Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore, capturing its imposing grandeur. The columns are more than mere architectural features; they are echoes of ancient temples, reborn in a Christian context. These vertical pillars, reaching towards the heavens, recall the columns of the Temple of Solomon, representing strength and divine connection. We see them, too, in Bramante’s Tempietto, scaled down, but no less resonant. Over time, the column evolves, yet retains its primal symbolism. These architectural symbols tap into our collective memory, a deep-seated yearning for stability and order. The basilica’s imposing structure speaks to the human need for a space where the earthly and the divine can converge. It is a testament to our enduring search for meaning, echoing through time and space.
