Biography
Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) was an Italian artist best known for his etchings of ancient Roman ruins. Born in Mogliano Veneto, Italy, Piranesi spent most of his career in Rome, where he meticulously documented the city's architectural heritage. His dramatic and often fantastical depictions of Roman structures, including the Colosseum and the Pantheon, captured the grandeur and mystery of ancient Rome. Piranesi's etchings became highly influential in the development of Romanticism and Gothic Revival architecture, shaping the perception of classical antiquity for generations.
