Hendrick Hondius I created this landscape with elegant company in the Netherlands, sometime in the early 17th century. In it, we see a mixture of town life and country pursuits. What can this artwork tell us about the social life of the Dutch Republic at this time? Well, note that while nature features prominently, it is nature viewed from a particular social position. The figures on the right of the picture, with their fine clothes, represent the wealthy classes who are in a position to enjoy the beauties of nature as a form of leisure. The busy town in the background provides the economic basis that makes their lifestyle possible. Hondius was a prolific printmaker, and prints such as these catered to a market of wealthy collectors. The image thus reflects a particular way of viewing the world that was prevalent at the time. To understand the work of art more fully, a historian might consult archival sources to understand the patronage system for art at this time, as well as the economic and political conditions that shaped the world in which it was made.
