Jan Veth painted this portrait of Cornelia, Clara, and Johanna Veth using oil on canvas. The subdued palette and careful modelling give the image a sense of quiet dignity. The impasto is applied with precision in the faces. Note how Jan Veth varies the application, using more fluid strokes for the clothing. The fabrics range in their textures, from the soft folds of the dark dresses to the crisp geometry of the central figure’s tartan, and the textured fabric of the chair. Consider what was required to make this painting. Veth would have carefully prepared his canvas, priming it to create a smooth surface. Pigments were painstakingly mixed, achieving the sombre tones that define the work. The artist worked with brushes, some finely pointed, and others, larger, for broader coverage. His ability to render form and texture speaks to his high level of skill. Ultimately, it’s the mastery of materials and process that elevates this portrait. It’s a reminder that even in the age of mechanization, human skill remained essential.

Veth was young and still living at home when he portrayed his three sisters with painstaking honesty. His father assessed the likenesses of his daughters with equal candour: ‘My opinion of these portraits is, and will always be, that they are excellent likenesses, which are anything but flattering, and there are a few sharp edges, which I would rather have seen somewhat softened.’
