Willem Bastiaan Tholen created "Man in zeilboot", using etching techniques on paper. The print’s composition, rendered in monochromatic tones, presents a serene yet structured scene of a boat on water. The formal arrangement divides the space into distinct horizontal layers: the reflective water, the boat with figures, and the distant shoreline under a sky punctuated with clouds. The textures achieved through etching give a tactile quality to the water and sky, contrasting with the smoother treatment of the boat’s sail. The strategic use of light and shadow defines the contours of the boat and the figures within, creating depth and volume. Tholen's emphasis on tonal variation and texture invites a semiotic reading of the artwork, where the boat and its occupants become signs of human navigation and exploration. This work destabilizes traditional landscape art by focusing on the interaction between man and nature within a confined space. The formal elements function to express a broader philosophical engagement with humanity's place in the natural world.
