This photograph, "Voetbalwedstrijd tussen de manschappen en de officieren; spelers brengen voor of na de wedstrijd de Hitlergroet", was taken by an anonymous artist. It’s a small, unassuming picture, but don't let its size fool you. The grainy texture and stark monochrome palette give it a raw, documentary feel, as if ripped straight from history. Look at how the figures are arranged, the contrast between those giving the salute and the figures scattered on the field. The photograph’s surface is not smooth, but textured, with little flecks of silver adding depth. In the end, we're left with an image that raises more questions than answers. It reminds me a bit of Gerhard Richter’s blurred photographs, where the haziness invites us to project our own interpretations. It is in that space, where what we see blurs with what we feel, that art truly comes alive.
