Rodrigo Franzao seems to have made 'Admissible Inertia' with pastel and collage on pieced paper. The composition emerges from layered, circling lines, interrupted with blocks of color. Imagine Franzao, in their studio, coaxing the image out of a ground that is already pieced together, as though a fragmented idea. What I notice first is the off-kilter color palette. It's almost drab, verging on muddy, yet saved by the odd splotch of bright red, or teal. Then the loops and scribbles are like a restless mind, never settling, always moving. The dark geometric shapes act a bit like collage stop signs, as though to interrupt the flow. The overlaid marks bring to mind Cy Twombly, who also worked with collage. And yet, Franzao is doing something else entirely. Perhaps playing with ideas around form, chaos, and control. Ultimately, artists are always in conversation across time, experimenting, exchanging ideas, and inspiring one another's creativity. Painting embodies that ongoing spirit of expression!
