Sa Nogueira made this collage called "One" using paper and probably glue, though who knows what else might be lurking beneath the surface. It’s like a party of images crashed into one frame, with the American flag hanging out with a topless woman, a suited man and some text that's totally foreign to me. I am really drawn to the way Nogueira mashes up these seemingly unrelated images. It feels like a dream or a stream of consciousness. There’s a real physicality to the work, with the cut edges of the paper creating a tactile surface. The layering of images and textures creates a sense of depth. I am intrigued by the way the images are juxtaposed, creating new meanings and associations. It reminds me of the collages of Hannah Höch, who also used found images to create surreal and unsettling compositions. Ultimately, this collage is a reminder that art is always a conversation, a dialogue between artists, images, and ideas. It embraces ambiguity and multiple interpretations, inviting us to bring our own experiences and perspectives to the work.
