This untitled work is by Robert Rauschenberg, who was well known for his innovative use of materials. It’s a collage, made from all sorts of found objects and images. Rauschenberg was a master of what he called "combines," scrambling the hierarchies of art and life. Look closely, and you'll see a mix of high and low: photographs, patterned fabric, what seems to be children’s drawings, and even a cutout of a rooster! He blurred the lines between painting and sculpture, incorporating everyday materials into his work. It's as if he's saying that anything can be art, and that art can be found anywhere. But there’s also a deeper point here. By using mass-produced images and discarded items, Rauschenberg is commenting on consumer culture and the endless cycle of production and consumption, making it impossible to separate the artwork from the wider world of labor, politics, and consumption. He is not only challenging our ideas about what art is, but where it comes from.
