Robert Frank made "Flower festival--Spain 3" using photography, capturing a sequence of images. I love the contact sheet format. It shows the raw, unfiltered process. The images, in black and white, offer a glimpse into a festive scene. The light, or lack of it, creates strong contrast. Some frames are marked with what looks like grease pencil: the artist's touch, the editing. In the fourth row, two frames have '3' written across them, while another frame has '31' scratched in. It's interesting to consider what these might refer to. A phone number? A sequence? Frank's work reminds me a little of Garry Winogrand. Both had a knack for capturing a moment, a slice of life, without pretense. "Flower festival--Spain 3" is like a visual poem, inviting us to piece together a story from fragments.
