Robert Frank made this work, “Italy 18,” using gelatin silver print. As the name implies, this process involves the light sensitivity of silver salts to create an image. Frank was very attuned to the way photographic materials could express social realities. With its grainy texture and stark contrasts, gelatin silver has a documentarian quality, a sense of unvarnished truth. But in this work, Frank is playing with the possibilities of the medium. Note how the strips of film are layered, creating a montage effect. This draws our attention to the process of image-making itself. He invites us to see the world through his eyes, capturing fleeting moments and arranging them in a way that reflects his subjective experience. It is a reminder that photography is not just about capturing reality, but also about shaping it. In his hands, the darkroom became not just a place of technical processing, but of artistic creation.
