Curatorial notes

This is Stefano della Bella’s etching of a cartouche with two young satyrs, now at the Rijksmuseum. The print presents a symmetrical arrangement where two satyrs frame a central, shield-shaped void. Della Bella masterfully employs line and form to create a visually arresting composition. The figures, rendered with detailed cross-hatching, are muscular and dynamic, their forms softened by the whimsical, decorative elements surrounding them. The satyrs, mythical creatures, occupy a space between the human and the animal, which destabilizes the established categories of being. Above, Della Bella incorporates a cardinal’s hat and a helmet, emblems of religious and military power, thus engaging with themes of authority and representation. The semiotic structure here suggests a deeper engagement with power dynamics, where symbols of status are playfully integrated. Ultimately, the piece functions not merely as ornamentation but as a commentary on the very nature of symbols and the cultural codes they uphold.
