Rashid Al Khalifa created 'White Web' with strokes and splatters in white and black. I wonder what it felt like to create this? It's like Al Khalifa’s made a painting from the inside out, starting with a dark abyss that pulls at the bottom of the image, drawing our attention before flicking up to those white lines like stretched threads in a loom. There's something about the painting's surface, how it looks both fragile and robust, that makes me think about Agnes Martin, but where she uses grids, Al Khalifa is all about gesture. Each line feels like a decision, a reaction, maybe even a question. It's a delicate balance, you know? And those dark, brooding marks at the base are like the earth, holding everything together, while those white marks lift like something ephemeral, a fleeting moment caught in paint.
