This is an engraving of ‘Geloof naast altaar met lam op boek met de zeven zegels’ by an anonymous artist, whose date of creation is unknown, residing here at the Rijksmuseum. The composition balances a central female figure with symbolic elements. Notice how the engraver used line work to define texture and form, creating a contrast between light and shadow. The immaculate lines form an allegorical scene that invites contemplation. The figure is placed next to an altar, upon which rests a book sealed seven times, accompanied by a lamb, traditional symbols of faith and sacrifice. Above, a dove within a triangle, signifying the Holy Spirit, is centered, creating a hierarchical structure that guides the viewer’s eye upward. This arrangement echoes theological notions of the divine order. The precise lines of the engraving highlight a tension between earthly representation and spiritual significance. Consider how such visual encoding invites a deeper understanding of faith and its allegorical representation through a structured visual language.
