Lambertus Antonius Claessens created this print, "Memorieprent voor George Washington," to memorialize the American hero, at a time of great political change in the late 18th century. Here, we see an allegorical representation of the arts, or perhaps, memory itself, being guided by an angel. She is inscribing a dedication to Washington. The image, however, complicates the narrative of American independence. In the context of European colonialism, Washington’s legacy is now viewed through a more critical lens, acknowledging the marginalization and oppression of indigenous populations and the continuation of slavery during his lifetime. This print invites us to reflect on how historical figures are remembered, and whose stories are privileged in the process. Consider how artistic portrayals of historical figures can both celebrate and obscure complex legacies.
