Curatorial notes
This print, Allegory on the Founding of Sincere Patriotic Societies in 1787, was made in the Netherlands by an anonymous artist. It’s a color etching – a commercial process using acid to incise lines in a metal plate, which is then inked and printed. The print allegorizes the political environment of the time, but I’m particularly drawn to the way the image itself was manufactured. Etching allowed for relatively quick and consistent reproduction, which was essential for disseminating political ideas and imagery widely. The regularity of the etched line, the evenness of the printed color, all speak to the rise of mass communication. Look closely, and you’ll see that the medium is the message. The very processes used to create this image are tied to the social and political shifts it depicts. This was a period of intense political upheaval. Making the print available for widespread distribution was a means to sway popular opinion and mobilize political action.
