Victor Brauner painted "Horizon intérieur," an exploration of inner space, sometime before his death in 1966. Brauner, of Jewish-Romanian heritage, was deeply influenced by the interwar period, marked by political instability and the rise of antisemitism in Europe. His engagement with Surrealism led him to explore the subconscious, as you see here with the geometric forms and disorienting, dreamlike imagery. There's a sense of fragmentation, as if the self is being deconstructed and reassembled, reflecting the fractured identities and experiences of marginalized communities during this era. The eyes in the image confront the viewer, challenging us to consider our own perceptions and biases. Brauner once said, "Painting is for me the only way to get closer to the visible and invisible universe," reflecting his belief in art as a means of understanding both the external world and the internal self. This piece invites us to contemplate the boundaries between inner and outer realities, and how they shape our understanding of identity and belonging.
