The Summit 

Editor: Michael Parkes' painting, "The Summit," conjures a whimsical scene with classical undertones. How do you interpret this work? Curator: It is a delightful piece! The masks indeed offer a fascinating layer. They suggest disguise, or perhaps the different faces we present to the world. To me, Parkes' figures always seem caught between worlds, neither fully human nor entirely fantastical. The muted colors contribute to a dreamlike atmosphere. Notice how the composition directs your gaze upward, suggesting aspiration, or the seeking of a 'summit'. What do you make of the setting? Is it a physical location, or more of a state of mind? Editor: It feels like both! Like they are on the precipice of something, a decision perhaps. The setting adds to the allegorical quality of the piece. Curator: Precisely! Parkes often explored allegorical themes, inviting viewers to ponder universal truths. The figures might represent aspects of the self, or the challenges we face in our personal journeys. It feels strangely Romantic, doesn't it? What lessons might be gleaned from their summit? Editor: That you have to be wary and accept that even a winged character needs to wear different masks at different times in their life. It’s like this painting reminds us to be conscious of the roles we play and question their true meaning. Curator: I find that a profound reflection!
